A Busy Morning at the Community Garden

Our usual Tuesday session at the community garden turned into a bit of a rescue mission this week!

When we arrived, we discovered a box of seedlings that we hadn't managed to plant the week before. Unfortunately, the box had been sitting in water, and most of the tomato seedlings hadn't survived. Thankfully, we were able to rescue the beetroot seedlings — and there were a lot of them! We also found some surviving tomato plants and cabbages that were still good to plant.

So we got to work. We weeded a garden bed and added compost to give the seedlings a good start. Caleb and Nico had fun getting stuck in and using the garden tool to turn over the soil.

About halfway through the morning, Taimana, our newest Timebank member, arrived with her two girls to lend a hand. It was wonderful to have them join us, and working together meant the job was quickly done.

Planting the beetroot was a particularly fiddly job, with so many little seedlings to carefully get into the ground, but we managed to plant them all. We also got the surviving tomato plants and cabbages into the garden.

What started as a box of very soggy seedlings turned into a productive morning of rescuing, preparing, planting and working together. We’re looking forward to watching our little beetroot plants grow!
