Growing a Food Forest in Kaingaroa 🌱

Sharing knowledge, growing food and building a more resilient community.

Something exciting is growing in Kaingaroa! Lynn is establishing a food forest at her property, creating an opportunity to explore how we can grow food while working with nature.

A food forest brings together a variety of useful plants in a garden designed to mimic some of the layers and relationships found in a natural forest. Depending on what is planted, it can provide fruit, nuts, herbs and other edible plants, while creating habitat and supporting a healthy garden ecosystem.

Learning Together

You might know Lynn through the Māra Kai programme or the many pruning workshops she has led over the years. Lynn has generously shared her gardening knowledge and experience with our community, and now she’s creating another opportunity for people to learn from her through a new food forest project at her home in Kaingaroa.

Lynn has already run a number of free workshops at her property, sharing her knowledge and years of experience with people interested in learning more about food forests.

The workshops offer a chance to learn practical skills, ask questions and discover how to get started creating a food forest of your own. More workshops are planned, giving the community further opportunities to learn from Lynn and contributing to something long lasting and be part of the project as it develops.

Whether you have plenty of gardening experience or are just beginning to explore growing your own food, learning from someone with years of hands-on experience can be a valuable place to start.

Earn Time Credits for Taking Part

Did you know you can earn Timebank credits for attending Lynn's food forest workshops?

The workshops are free, and time credits are available to everyone who attends. Simply email Chloe or Paula at taitokerautimebank@gmail.comĀ after attending to have your credits transferred.

It's a great way to learn practical skills, benefit from Lynn's years of experience and strengthen our community at the same time!

Help the Food Forest Grow

Lynn is currently looking for donations of suitable plants and seedlings to help establish the food forest. She's also happy to purchase plants and seedlings, so if you have something suitable to offer, it may still be useful to get in touch.

Projects like this grow through a combination of knowledge, practical work and community support. Sharing plants, skills and experience helps create something that can benefit people well beyond one property.

Want to Get Involved?

Keep an eye out for future free workshops on our website and FB page and for opportunities to support Lynn's food forest in Kaingaroa.

If you have plants or seedlings to contribute, or would like to learn more about the project, get in touch with Tiaki Taiao Trust to find out how you can help.
