The compost hub at He Awhi Rito just received an enriching make-over! Jo Shanks and her husband, Cliff, ran a mercy mission down from the Eco Centre, Kaitaia in a car loaded with ingredients to jazz-up the bins!
It was an absolutely beautiful day to get dirty! And the Ecosolutions team were joined by several keen Timebank members – who earned time credits for their contribution!

There are 2 sets of the 3-bin compost system at He Awhi Rito and over time has absorbed tons of compostable ‘waste’ from various local events. This includes items like wooden cutlery, food containers and food.
We had the best fun under the sun, emptying all the bins and then re-filling them using the successful compost layering system – ‘greens’ & ‘browns’. In this case, layers of part-digested compost, grass clippings, mulch and shredded paper.
Composting is the very best way to ‘give-back’ to Papatūānuku, enriching the Earth and minimising the contaminating effects of ‘waste’ to landfill.

The raised beds also benefited with a feed with some of the yummy compost!
