Canning and Preserving - back in Fashion

Tai Tokerau Timebank in Whangārei hosted a canning and preserving information evening led by Timebank member Roslyn, who was a very informative and entertaining speaker.

 

Having a supply of ready-made food / meals in your pantry is clever planning and a vital support in power outages – the difference between stressful surviving and enjoyable thriving.

 

Roslyn is a mine of practical & theoretical information with a background in food science. Talking us through the technicalities of canning and preserving and handing round jars of pre-prepared foods from her pantry (we know whose door to knock on in a “food emergency”!)

 

Canned food can include ready-made meals, cooked meat and fish. They last much longer than preserved fruit and veg if kept in a dark space out of the light.

 

‘Canners’ are basically heavy duty, specially designed pressurised cookers which need very careful preparation and handling to use. They require a heavy duty stove top as they weigh alot – eg heavy duty induction hobs and wood fire ranges.
